Some recent work, a bit of news, and a springtime favorite from the archive.
And, sadly, a not-so-favorite from the archive.

Again

Last week Atlanta. Yesterday Boulder. It's tiresome, it's depressing, it's maddening. A commentary from a couple of years back in reaction to a different mass shooting, but sadly, I'm not sure which one.

Same Ladder or Not?

An outtake [aka: rejected sketch] done for Education Next, about interventions that work well for moderately disadvantaged students but not well for severely disadvantaged students. I was particularly fond of this sketch, although another one was selected by the client and will appear in print in the coming months.

Society of Illustrators Online Gallery Opens

The Society of Illustrators online gallery featuring work juried into the 63rd Annual show is now open. In normal times, there would have been a physical opening at the Society's gallery in NYC, but because of Covid, this year's show is primarily online only (reservations can be made to see the show in person). I have two illustrations in the show, and as much as I'd prefer to see them hanging—framed—on the gallery's walls, it's always an honor to be recognized by one's peers. Info about my two illustrations appeared in last month's newsletter.

Pineapple and Bacon!? Mamma Mia!

Part of a series of five illustrations I recently created for The Economist, on the debate over the toppings used on Hawaiian pizza. Afficionados of Neapolitan pizza—which has protected status under European law—were among the most vocal critics.

A Slice of What!?

Another for The Economist. When a chef in the 60s decided to put canned pineapple on a pizza, little did he know how explosive the debate would evenually become. Two things I learned in the course of doing this job: that there was a debate over Hawaiian pizza, and that pineapples are hard to draw.

Many Thoughts, One Decision

A decision is often expressed as a simple yes or no, but behind that single word is an intricate web of neurons and synapses analyzing multiple thoughts and considerations in real time.

Cherry Blossom Festival poster

This week marks the beginning of DC's annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Here's one from the archives: the artwork for the Cherry Blossom Festival poster I created several years ago.
