Fall's just around the corner! Time for Mother Nature to turn down the heat. Finally.
Here is some recently commissioned work, and a couple of timely pieces from the archive.
Speaking of commissions, I look forward to more, with the "August recess" out of the way.
Let's collaborate!
Back in the USSR
Well... back in Russia, actually, but The Beatles' wording sounds better. For the Economist 1843 magazine, one of a series of illustrations about Russians who left their country to avoid the draft, only to return to Russia for various reasons.
Keeping in Touch
Another illustration from the series for the Economist. The main character of the article kept in touch with friends back in Russia, missing them and his home; his phone's lock screen pictured a view of Moscow taken from his apartment window.
Moscow
Sometimes I get carried away on the details. For the image of Moscow in the illustration above, I could have simplified things, but I opted for more detail in large part because it's a challenge I enjoy.
Wait... is it a trap?
Russia lured many workers back to Russia with lucrative jobs and other benefits, but others who had left worried that it was a trap, fearing they would be pressed into military service if they returned.
Labor Day
September kicks off with Labor Day, honoring American laborers. To mark the occasion, here's one from the archives; a poster originally created for and exhibited at the Manifest Hope gallery in DC shortly before Obama's election in 2008.
Back to School
One more from the archives... created for the New Yorker magazine's late, great Blown Covers blog, in which art director Françoise Mouly provided a prompt to illustrators for hypothetical New Yorker magazine covers. The prompt for this was, "Back to School," and I opted for a parent's eye view: back to school for kids means back to some semblance of normal for parents.
