Hope everyone is keeping cool this unusually hot summer. Here are some images from recent assignments, plus a couple of goodies from the archives.
Down the Drain
From a series for Reader's Digest magazine. A couple who contracted for an in-ground swimming pool was scammed out of tens of thousands of dollars when a scammer, via e-mail, posed as the pool company and requested money up front via Zelle, an online digital payment service. The pool company was not complicit, and the scammer was never caught.
Slide to Nowhere
Another illo from the series for Reader's Digest magazine about the pool scam. Plans were in place and construction scheduled to begin for the backyard pool when the scammer struck, blindsiding the couple and the pool company. The couple was looking forward to taking a refreshing splash that summer, but it never happened.
Man, It's Hot!
I include this one for recent subscribers to my newsletter—longtime recipients may recognize it... it's a personal favorite that I often include during the summer. Done for the New Yorker Magazine's one-time Blown Covers blog, where illustrators submitted ideas for theoretical cover illustrations based on prompts assigned by art director Françoise Mouly. The prompt for this one was, "Man, It's Hot!"
Weight... I could live to be how old?
For an Economist article about a doctor who claims his unique intermittent 5-day fasting can lead to increased longevity, with the potential to live to age 110. This was part of a series on this doctor's fasting diet; other illustrations from the series can be seen in the June newsletter.
Draggin' the Line
I recently saw Tommy James and the Shondells in concert... an old favorite from my younger days. The band opened with "Draggin' the Line." It's a song that inspired an illustration I did a couple of years back, which I included in a handmade artist's book I created featuring illustrations of songs with colorful lyrics. The song, about working hard, living well, and appreciating what you've got, includes these lyrics, which inspired the artwork: My dog Sam eats purple flowers /
We ain't got much but what we got's ours...
