Hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer that's not too blasted hot, although it looks like we're getting off to a blistering start here on the East coast. It's never too hot to draw pictures, however, so feel free to send work my way. Here are some recent ones.

Economist: Fasting

A series for The Economist's 1843 magazine. An Italian doctor believes his fasting diet can help you live to age 100. A really classy spread from the design team to showcase the artwork.

Economist: Fasting

The fasting diet can be extreme. A lunch might consist of olives, mushroom soup powder, a vitamin pill and tea. The glass of water was a last minute addition to the artwork when the proportions needed to be changed. I included water—rather than tea—to keep the color focused on the lone olive and to emphasize the sparseness of the meal. Besides, I like a challenge, and a glass of ice water fit the bill.

Snake Oil

Not everyone in the scientific community embraces the longevity claims made by the doctor, who has a lucrative business marketing his diet through a company he founded. The doctor is also a guitarist with a rock and roll background who once toured with a band before turning his attention to the science of aging. [For the 1843 "fasting" series.]

Light as a Feather

The five-day fasting kit ships in a sleek box with 5 numbered boxes inside; each box contains 3 pre-packaged meals. It's not strictly fasting, but it's close; most days' plant-based, gluten-free meals total only 725 calories. [For the 1843 "fasting" series.]

Popcorn Vendor

A personal piece that was inspired by an illustration project that took an unexpected turn. Having worked up a number of sketches and amused by the subject, I decided to take this to finish on my own.

Heat Wave

From the archives, originally done for the New Yorker's "Blown Covers" blog, in which illustrators submitted ideas based on a prompt; in this case, the prompt was, "Man, It's Hot!" Seems appropriate as the forecast calls for triple-digit temps later this week.
