I recently completed a series of illustrations related to Donald Trump. Politically sensitive issues nearly caused the article to be scrapped, and I've decided to not post that artwork at this time. But it led me to consider past assignments that relate to Trump's current actions.
Here are some those illustrations.
Make America Grate Again
An oldie but goodie from Trump's first term, as he wasted no time shredding the Constitution.
Church and State
Originally done for Liberty magazine for an article about public schools displaying the Ten Commandments. But in pushing for vouchers to be allowed for religious schools, the separation of church and state has again become an issue. There is also a push to allow wealthy individuals to donate stock to private schools and get a 100% tax credit.
Breaking Down Justice
Another illustration done for Liberty magazine, this one about the Supreme Court's novel theory that struck down Roe. The Court, packed with right-leaning justices and Trump appointees, has continued to break with tradition, giving Trump near-total immunity and siding with the administration in a number of controversial decisions. To its credit, the Court has also blocked several Trump initiatives.
Environmental Regulations Adrift
This illustration was originally done for a Scientific American article about the benefits of the congressionally mandated National Climate Assessment. Shortly after taking office, Trump fired close to 400 scientists working on the Assessment, just one of scores of anti-environmental actions taken by the administration. Other actions include pulling the US out of the Paris climate accords, opening up sprawling tracts of land for oil drilling and the timber industry, reviving the coal industry, rolling back regulations on greenhouse and toxic emissions, and firing hundreds of EPA scientists and employees.
Hounding Harvard
Trump's retaliation spree against Harvard has been damaging, not only to the University but to those who benefit from Harvard's research. This illustration was originally done for the National Federation of Teachers, for an article on the harm caused by trimming university budgets. Trump has not only threatened to withhold funding and grant money, he's threatened to ban the University from accepting international students. My son graduates with a masters degree from Harvard this week and I can tell you he benefitted greatly from his interactions with international students, many of them Chinese.
Hunger in America
A pro-bono illustration done for the National Labor Federation about hunger in America. Despite tremendous national wealth, many go hungry in this country. The Trump administration is planning deep cuts to SNAP (aka "food stamps") and WIC (a supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children). The president of American Academy of Pediatrics says that “pediatricians are losing sleep over this... and [we] are going to... really see hungry kids and the impact on their growth trajectory." Additionally, Trump has dismantled USAID, which has a long history of providing nutrition assistance to foreign countries, with a focus on women and children.
Grim Reaper
An illustration created during Trump's first term, addressing his mishandling of the COVID pandemic, which led to countless of unnecessary deaths. This term, Trump's firing of employees across federal health agencies (NIH, FDA, HHS and CDC for example) and canceling of research grants has health experts voicing concern over the fate of medical research and public health. Trump's 90-day pause in international AIDS prevention programs as well as the dismantling of USAID is estimated to be responsible to tens of thousands of excess deaths related to AIDS as well as TB, malaria and other diseases. Medicaid cuts can have deadly consequences, especially for women and the elderly who are sick. And who knows what will happen when the head of HHS is a vaccine skeptic?
