I hope everyone's surviving this unpredictable winter weather! I've been staying out of the cold, head down, cranking out work... although I did recently oversee the building a snowman (and took a ski trip).
Here are some recent collaborative efforts with clients, both old and new.
Revitalizing Downtown
A recent illustration for Deseret Magazine about mid-size cities' efforts to revitalize their downtowns by completely transforming them.
When Schools and Religious Families Clash
An illustration for Liberty magazine, part of a series on a clash between a Maryland public school district and religious families. The clash stemmed from classroom reading material that included LGBTQ themes and the school district's refusal to allow an opt-out opportunity for students, which caused an outcry from a number of religious families.
Misaligned Beliefs
Another illustration for the Liberty magazine series. The school district and the families were unable to bridge the gap created by the absence of an opt-out clause related to the classroom reading material.
An Addiction Problem
One of a series of illustrations for The Economist, on the subject of issues encountered by extremely wealthy families. Among the problems some family members face is addiction to prescription drugs. I wanted to suggest an addiction to money as well as the addiction to drugs.
Giving It Away
Another piece for the "wealthy families" article for The Economist. Marlene Engelhorn, a young Austrian heiress who inherited a sizable fortune, came to see the money as unearned, saw unfairness in wealth distribution, and decided to give her fortune away to worthy causes. Because of her charity, I chose to include a nod to religious iconography in my depiction of her.
Snowman
British artist and environmentalist Andy Goldsworthy once observed that "snow provokes responses that reach right back to childhood." I've never outgrown my love for snow, and between my childhood and those of my children I sometimes wonder how many snowmen I've "assembled," only to have them disappear—and be re-created year after year.
